Last week, there was an article on Computerworld stating that Microsoft is still working on its Atlas framework for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX). The Atlas framework is said to not displace the JavaScript technology with its own Microsoft technology.

Atlas will be incorporated in Microsoft’s next version of its .NET development software. it should ship after January 2007 in its Visual Studio software platform. The representative said that they have made Atlas easy enough for developers in other languages such as PHP to use, but there are no mentions of specific versions of Atlas for those not using .NET.

I think integration of Atlas will be good for those using .NET in the Windows environment. If you are using Visual Studio it should make your code process easier, but who knows until the product actually ships. Many developers are using JavaScript libraries to create their AJAX applications and for the most part these libraries seem to work for me on my development. We will just have to see if this platform is any better that what we already have.
