CNET News.com had a post a couple days ago about LAMP in the industry. For those of you that don’t know LAMP is Linux operating system, Apache Web Server, MySQL database, and a scripting language such as PHP, Perl, or Python. Many times I will use this system on Mac OS X and use PHP as my scripting language of choice.

Many companies are building packages on this stack in order to make it easier for businesses to integrate into their corporation. Some customers are looking to migrate from Microsoft’s .NET or Sun’s Java and want a proven path to success. LAMP has become more competitive with these products over the years and many times at a much better price. It’s easy to see that businesses gain a larger profit because they can do the same tasks cheaper.

Integrating the components together to form LAMP has come a long way. Each piece now works together well where it might not have in the past. Many companies are building their product on the LAMP stack in order to pass the savings along to their customers.

In any case, LAMP will never replace the existing technologies completely, but it will definitely give choice to its potential buyers. For the most part LAMP has been everything my customers are needing. The sites I do are pretty simple so it fits the bill perfectly.
