The details were accidentally leaked on the web by Seagate themselves describing their new 7200.10 series drives utilizing perpendicular technology. Two 750GB models have shown up on Seagate’s website as well as other 7200.10 drives ranging from 200GB-750GB. These drives all run at 7200 RPM and offer 16MB and 8MB buffers.
These are some of the first 3.5-inch hard drives that use the perpendicular technology. Many companies including Seagate already offer this technology in their 2.5-inch hard drives. The difference in this new technology allows the manufacturer to increase the density of data within each platter of the drive. This allows drives to be bigger without using any additional physical space.
According to DailyTech, Seagate representatives told them that the information about the new drives were not supposed to be posted for several weeks.
It’s only a matter of time before drives reach 1TB of data. For the most part I’m pretty happy with my two 300GB drives, but in the future there will always be a need for more and more storage. This is especially true as broadband connections get faster and more and more people are storing HD quality video on their machines.
