CSS Navigation Techniques

April 23rd, 2006

Vitaly Friedman’s CSS showcase posts a pretty good collection of CSS navigation examples. The techniques showcase has examples of list-based navigation, drop down menus, and tabs. There are quite a few examples on there and it’s worth checking out. Some examples, since they rely heavily on CSS will not work in all browsers. As more and more people start adopting modern browsers, these navigation examples will be fully compatible.

The thing with supporting older browsers and cross platform compatibility is that some of the new cool features CSS has to offer will not render properly on across all browsers. This is a challenge I face when I create pages for my clients. For the most part I stopped supporting IE for Mac since Microsoft hasn?t supported it in over a year. Other than that I support IE 6, 7, all the Mozilla based browsers such as Firefox, and KHTML browsers such as Safari.

My browser of choice continues to be Mozilla’s Firefox. As I have said before I use Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. I can find a version of Firefox for each of the platforms. All of the CSS navigation examples work correctly in the browser, so have a look in Firefox then take a look in an older browser and you can see what I am talking about. If there are any examples you would like to post send a comment or contact me.
