Howto forge has another tutorial on setting up LAMP on the latest version of Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is definitely my Linux flavor of choice probably because it’s the easiest for me to setup and somewhat resembles my favorite platform of choice Mac OS X. The LAMP stack runs well on Ubuntu and for the most part has gotten a lot easier to install. I no longer have weird issues where I ask myself why is it doing that, and have no explanation.
The newest Ubuntu install has a specific option for creating a LAMP server probably because it has become such a popular installation. How could it be any easier? Since this is a tutorial for users new to Linux, he installs a GUI. After doing a few installations it all depends if you are comfortable with command line. I have used the command line for a while and usually administer my servers remotely anyway so production installations are best without a GUI.
If you are new to LInux and installed the GUI, you mine as well install Webmin. It will be the easiest for you to configure and its free. I’ve used some of the other web interfaces but there tends to be a fee for a lot of them. There’s many out there so the best one for you is probably the one that?s easiest for you to use and the most secure.
The rest of the tutorial is pretty straight forward and I think it’s a pretty good one for those getting started with LAMP. For more custom installations make sure to do your research or hire a professional that knows what they are doing. It will save you a lot of headache later and in the end save you money. Good job to the poster or the tutorial.
