Solid Information Technology will create the open-source storage engine designed for transactional applications reported by ZDNet as well as CNET News.com.
Solid was looking for a way to expand its enterprise market and I think the adoption of many people using MySQL will help a great deal. This is also big for people developing Web 2.0 applications because they can more readily more into transaction-based applications. Even it is supposed in MySQL 5, I see it as a building block for continued improvement on the technology.
The product will take the dual-licsense approach, which is nice for individual looking to experiment with the new product, and companies are able to gain support by signing up for a contact.
The MySQL database can run on different storage engines, the most popular being the transaction-oriented InnoDB.
I have been using MySQL for a number of years now, but I have only really grazed the surface of its potential. It’s nice to see an open source product making a big impact in Web 2.0 applications.
