MySQL plans to release technical details of its upcoming storage engine and administration tools. The codename for this database engine is Falcon expected to be completed later this year. A user conference will take place this coming week detailing specifics regarding the new engine.

MySQL’s database is built to accept different type of storage engines for different purposes such as transactions or indexing. The architecture allows the database creator to use different engines for different tasks all within the same database.

The company is also expected to show MySQL Workbench, a GUI based database design tool that will be offered under the open-source GPL.

After using MySQL for quite some time now, I have yet to jump into all the different types of storage engines it has to offer. For the most part, I use the database engine for small sites and have yet to really have specifics mentioned above. In the future, I know I will have some projects that will utilize this technology to its fullest extent and it’s good to see that there is a solution for the problem.
