Since Apple has decided to release Safari for Windows, it got me thinking, what’s preventing me from using Safari as my default browser for web development. Up until now, I had been using Firefox with a few extensions for web development: Venkman, Firebug, and Web Developer. It got me thinking, Apple is releasing Safari so Windows users can develop for the iPhone. I’m thinking that’s the main reason, and it might be nice to pull some of the marketshare as well. ZDNet had a blog post regarding browser usage recently. The numbers are clear that Firefox is continuing to gain market share over Internet Explorer. Seattle PI has an interview on their Software Notebook with 21-year-old Blake Ross, the founder of Firefox. He makes some really good points throughout the interview a few of which I will discuss and give my opinion on in this post. For those of you that don’t know, Ross launched the Mozilla Firefox project in 2002 with fellow software developer Dave Hyatt. While I’m only 23 myself its good to see how people close to my age are making an impact in the industry. Google released Google Browser Sync an extension for Firefox users to sync bookmarks, history, cookies, and saved passwords. I had been looking for something that could make it easy to sync different things on my computer. I had found a program called Syncopation to sync my iTunes library. MySync allows syncing of Mail, Address Book, iCal and Safari. I’m a Firefox user and these products only work on Mac OS X however and Google Browser Sync works on all platforms and syncs through my Google account as opposed to broadcasting like a server in my network. I haven’t really attempted to create my own Firefox extensions. I think it would be pretty cool to create some tools people could use, but I can’t seem to find the time to do projects like these. Firefox 2.0 will receive anti-phish help from Google. Google Safe Browsing will be incorporated into the next version of Firefox, which is releasing its third alpha version. The Moleskin has a good entry about Firefox extensions for web development. Two extensions that I use quite often are the Firefox web developer extension and Firebug. They are two really useful extensions for me and they allow me to develop sites more efficiently. Looking over the other extensions they seem to offer web developers some handy tools. According to IT Wire, Microsoft has signed a deal with Amazon to replace Google’s search engine with Windows Live search on Amazon’s site. Amazon is one of the most visited sites on the web, double Microsoft’s and a quarter of Google’s. Read the rest of this entry »

Firefox 1.5.0.3 was released today to deal with a security fix for a denial of service vulnerability. It installed in my browser through automatic updates. I did not notice any other changes to the browser and the only release note was dealing with the security fix.
