Who Will Out-Search Google?

Apple Matters had an article about Google and is competitors and its forthcoming competitors. Google is the leading search engine by far, but that never means that another engine can’t come out and out perform the engine. As stated in the article, Google isn’t perfect and it will never be perfect. In fact, no service for that matter will ever be perfect.

Finance Sites: Yahoo Leads, Google Lags

PC World had an article last week about the number on finance websites. The most popular is Yahoo by far and MSN at a distant second. Google just recently launched its finance site and ranks 42nd on a list tabulated by Hitwise.

Now, Free Ways to Do Desktop Work on the Web

The New York Times had an article about AJAX web applications on the web to use in place of desktop applications. The article says computer hardware has reached a point where its very inexpensive to pick up a pretty good system. The software however ends up costing even more than the hardware. Google has bought Writely a web based word processor and also released a preview of its spreadsheet software.

Google Picasa Web Albums

Google has had their Picasa desktop application for Windows for a while now. I used it a little bit, but since I primarily use my Macs to handle photos I use iPhoto. Google Picasa Web Albums was recently released and it since its in a web browser it works across platforms. It seems like a pretty cool tool but I think the new Yahoo beta will end up being better.

Google Browser Sync

Google released Google Browser Sync an extension for Firefox users to sync bookmarks, history, cookies, and saved passwords. I had been looking for something that could make it easy to sync different things on my computer. I had found a program called Syncopation to sync my iTunes library. MySync allows syncing of Mail, Address Book, iCal and Safari. I’m a Firefox user and these products only work on Mac OS X however and Google Browser Sync works on all platforms and syncs through my Google account as opposed to broadcasting like a server in my network.

Google Crushes Competitors in Search Market Share

Last week Computerworld released numbers about search engine market share. The leader Google grabbed 59.3% followed by Yahoo at 22% with MSN at 12.1% in third. Google has held the lead for a long time now, but search engine competitors are always attempting to improve their engines in order to regain market share from the giant.

Google Spreadsheets Sneak Peek

Google has released a test version of their Google Spreadsheet software. You can sign up to be on the list to try out the new software. Like GMail it’s a web baased application using AJAX as its key method for transportation. This is another Web 2.0 example and another transition from desktop applications to web applications. Now I don’t think all desktop applications will be replaced by web applications anytime soon, there is definitely a strong push to develop the ones that are possible at this time.

Google: No Web Browser Plans

I’ve read quite a few articles around the web about rumors that Google will release its own web browser. CNET News.com has an article downplaying the idea. Google says they will only release a web browser if they felt there was real benefit in doing so.

Google Web Toolkit – Build AJAX Apps in the Java Language

Google has released the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) written in Java to allow easy implementation of AJAX applications for web developers. What the Google Web Toolkit does is takes the developers Java code and converts it to HTML and JavaScript for use in an AJAX application.
