As reported on Hawk Wings, Gmail has added the ability to add photos to the people in your contact list. This is similar to how instant messaging applications allow the user to have an icon. The Google Talk application allows this and since Talk is now implemented in Gmail’s web interface, it seems like a logical feature to add.

Google has released Google Trends, a utility used to analyze users search trends. While they have a disclaimer on the bottom of the page that it does not include all data and infers a few things in order to tabulate its data, it’s still a pretty handy tool for people. I see this especially useful for web developers using keyword based ad placements.

According to IT Wire, Microsoft has signed a deal with Amazon to replace Google’s search engine with Windows Live search on Amazon’s site. Amazon is one of the most visited sites on the web, double Microsoft’s and a quarter of Google’s.

There was a recent article on CNET News.com regarding monopoly issue against Microsoft, but this time by the search giant Google. With Internet Explorer 7 it puts the search on MSN and point more advertising dollars to that site due to its high volume of OS popularity. Google believes this is an unfair advantage in advertising.

I have been following Darren Rowse’s blog ProBlogger for a few months now. I guess you could say he gave me some inspiration into moving into the whole blog format and for the most part I’m glad I did. It’s a great way to get my views out and an easy way to keep my sites updated. In his post, the Cost of Comment Spam he mentioned that he has seen some people give up on preventing spam in their comment posts.

A couple of days ago the NY Times had an article about MySpace’s approach to big profit. The domain name MySpace.com was purchased in 2002 by Chris DeWolfe. The site originally was used to sell a motor skooter. DeWolfe had experience in online marketing such as e-mail blasts and pop-up advertising. MySpace took a different approach.

Cybernet Technology News has some screenshots of a new search layout that Google is testing out. The new layout is very similar to the old layout except that it has an expandable arrow to show more information about the site such as a thumbnail and more content. Also available is the ability to search within that site.

AJAX Magazine has a small tutorial on how to integrate Google Calendar into your website using PHP and AJAX. The PHP script just reads the feed from Google Calendar which you can publish via XML or ICAL. This script can read either the public or private calendars. The JavaScript is a basic XML parser which reads the data from the PHP script and output’s it to the DOM.

AOL may release a competitor to the popular MySpace social networking site. The rumors has been somewhat confirmed by associates working at AOL. It seems to be a pretty good market but AOL may be too late in the game to unseat MySpace.
