Netflix has released a set top box made by Roku. It allows streaming of about 10,000 titles from the NetFlix service to your TV. I already have an AppleTV, but I’m thinking about picking one up. The box costs $100 and there is no additional monthly fee if you have an unlimited account with Netflix.
As of right now Netflix does not have any HD videos for streaming, but I think if it’s DVD quality that’s okay with me for now. I just rent the standard DVDs from the Netflix service anyway. I’m interested to see how the quality is and how well it streams from the service. Read the rest of this entry »

I’m not sure what I think about Yahoo rejecting Microsoft’s bid. I know Yahoo has been struggling and needs help, but I’m not sure Microsoft is the best suitor for that. I’ve been reading about other potential suitors, but all of them don’t really seem like a good fit. You have Google, but if that were to happen that would cause a huge monopoly has far as search is concerned. Most people I know use Google, then a smaller amount use Yahoo and an even smaller amount use MSN. If Google were to buy Yahoo I think everyone will end up using Google. Read the rest of this entry »

I signed up to try out the pre-release candidate of Windows Vista. For the most part I my primary OS is Mac OS X. I only use Windows XP to test my web work out on different browsers on that platform. I enjoy participating in beta test whether it be a web application or a desktop application. I like to see what other programmers are developing and sometimes it even sparks ideas in my own work. After using Vista for a few days now, I still think Mac OS X will continue to be my platform of choice, but I am pretty impressed with the improvements of Vista over XP. Overall I don’t think one platform will ever completely replace the other even though Windows dominates the OS market. I think there can be multiple OS platforms that give people a choice. Everyone has their usual website that they visit on a regular basis. For me I’m really interested in technology so I like to visit sites related to that topic such as Engadget and Gizmodo. I recently started reading Uncrate as well. The three sites really have some interesting blog posts and it’s a good way to kill time. I mean I even have my own gadget blog called lightenment. Today I came across the site CrunchGear. It is similar to the other sites but since I also visit TechCrunch on a pretty regular basis I figure I would give it a shot. Read the rest of this entry »

Howto forge has another tutorial on setting up LAMP on the latest version of Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is definitely my Linux flavor of choice probably because it’s the easiest for me to setup and somewhat resembles my favorite platform of choice Mac OS X. The LAMP stack runs well on Ubuntu and for the most part has gotten a lot easier to install. I no longer have weird issues where I ask myself why is it doing that, and have no explanation.
