Apple has released the MacBook, a replacement to its aging iBook line. For the most part I have been waiting for this upgrade for quite some time now. I am looking to replace a Powerbook G4 and this might fit in to what I need. The Apple MacBooks features include a 13.3-inch widescreen display, Intel Core Duo processors clocked at 1.83Ghz or 2.0 GHz, iSight Camera, Front Row and Apple Remote, and MagSafe Power Adapter.

Google has released Google Trends, a utility used to analyze users search trends. While they have a disclaimer on the bottom of the page that it does not include all data and infers a few things in order to tabulate its data, it’s still a pretty handy tool for people. I see this especially useful for web developers using keyword based ad placements.

Myspace is attempting to jump further into the instant messaging world with its own IM client. Myspace currently allows instant messaging in its web interface, but this is an actual applications program similar to AIM which runs on the user’s computer. As Rafe Needleman of CNET says, while AIM tries to grab part of the social networking arena from MySpace, MySpace is looking to take over part of the IM market, which AIM dominates.

Opera has partnered with Nintendo to put their browser on the upcoming Wii game console. The new console will allow users to surf the Internet using its Wii remote controller. Opera promises to offer a browser that is fast and secure with support for the latest web technologies such as AJAX.

The Moleskin has a good entry about Firefox extensions for web development. Two extensions that I use quite often are the Firefox web developer extension and Firebug. They are two really useful extensions for me and they allow me to develop sites more efficiently. Looking over the other extensions they seem to offer web developers some handy tools.

According to CNET News.com, AOL plans to launch AIM Phoneline a free service for AIM users to communicate with any phone. This service is said to be different than typical voice over instant messaging in that it will offer a free phone number.

On the Google Operating System blog, there is an entry describing 10 features that are only available to Opera users. Most of these features are helpful in everyday browsing. Like the entry says there are Firefox extensions to make the browser more capable, but all of these features are included with Opera out of the box.

There’s a pretty cool PHP 5 tool that converts HTML to PDF called dompdf. So what do you need to run this app? Well first you will need to download dompdf from Digital Junkies website. Your server needs to be running PHP 5 with the DOM extension enabled. There is also an option of installing additional fonts. Read the installation documentation to find out how to do this.

According to IT Wire, Microsoft has signed a deal with Amazon to replace Google’s search engine with Windows Live search on Amazon’s site. Amazon is one of the most visited sites on the web, double Microsoft’s and a quarter of Google’s.

There was a blog entry on ZDNet a few days ago regarding JavaDB. JavaDB is a relational database management system written in Java. Apache has its own version named Derby. The JavaDB system will be included in Sun’s Solaris Enterprise System.
