CNET News.com posted an article last week about Microsoft’s attempt to replace the JPEG image format with its own Windows Media Photo. Microsoft says that the format will be supported in Windows Vista as well as Windows XP.
Microsoft showed a better-detailed image than JPEG or JPEG 2000 at the same compression ratio. Microsoft says the new format can have the same clarity at half the file size.
Smaller file size has many benefits such as storage, printing faster, transferring faster and this ultimately leads to better battery life.
I don’t know how well this new format will work for people or if cross platform operating systems will even support the format. As with any new technology there tends to be some sort of ramp up time. A lot of the time, people just aren’t willing to change fast enough for the technology and the technology ends up being lost.
