I’m not sure what I think about Yahoo rejecting Microsoft’s bid. I know Yahoo has been struggling and needs help, but I’m not sure Microsoft is the best suitor for that. I’ve been reading about other potential suitors, but all of them don’t really seem like a good fit. You have Google, but if that were to happen that would cause a huge monopoly has far as search is concerned. Most people I know use Google, then a smaller amount use Yahoo and an even smaller amount use MSN. If Google were to buy Yahoo I think everyone will end up using Google.
This isn’t a bad thing, but it may end up being for the same reason people use Windows over any other operating system. Sure there’s geeks like me that can argue Windows vs. Mac OS vs. Linux for hours an hours, and in my opinion I think the best OS is the one that you as the user will be the most efficient. For most people, it seems like well everyone uses it so I should too. Most people don’t know any better or even take the time. I think a lot of people use Windows because it’s more convinient even though say Mac OS might be a better fit for them. So back to Google buying out Yahoo. I see the same paradigm happening where maybe MSN or Ask or some other engine might be better for certain individuals, but no one will take the time to see if that is a better fit for them. Some can probably argue that this has already happened. Most people wonder if anyone uses anything but Google?
As far as other companies I’ve read about looks like tech companies that don’t really deal with search. Companies like Dell or HP or Apple would be taking on a huge project and it seems like those companies would want choice as far as the Internet and search is concerned. I mean I could be wrong since those Dell and HP promote Windows and Apple promoting Mac OS X as opposed to Linux for example. It seems like these companies wouldn’t want to take on Google especially since a company like Apple has such a good relationship with Google as seen in both the Mac OS and products like the iPhone.
It’s hard to say what really is a good fit. Off the top of my head I can’t really think of anyone who is a good fit, but I’m sure someone sees something that I don’t. One company is probably willing to take a huge chance and it may work out great for that company. Someone will have to take that Shaq/Phoenix Suns chance and only time will tell if it is a good choice or not.
