For a while I have been using the program Navicat to control MySQL databases and I still use it and will continue to use it. It does a great job and it is really easy to use. The price seems reasonable to me for the features it offers so I can’t really complain. Since I had been working with a lot of AJAX applications and noticed a lot of desktop applications being converted to web applications.
Of course there were already applications such as PHPMyAdmin which uses a web application to administor MySQL databases, but it doesn?t utilize AJAX and does not have the ease of use that a desktop application had. I started searching for a Navicat-like web application using AJAX but never really found one that I liked.
I thought maybe I’ll just write my own. I have the skill an the tools to create an application like that. Well time passed and I still hadn’t written anything but came across a program called TurboDbAdmin on TurboAJAX. I tried out the demo and it seemed to run reasonably well. It was pretty much how I would envision one of these applications to turn out.
I think they did a great job and it was exactly what I had in mind. Now I don’t know if I would give up Navicat, but TurboDbAdmin is definitely a great alternative for those looking for a free open source database administration application. Just another example of AJAX making routine things easier for people.
