There was a post on the ZDNet blog about Google spreadsheets possibly getting a chart function. This would be a big step for web applications and push it more towards becoming a replacement for a desktop application.

Google is good at implementing functionality that’s easy to use for its customers. Creating graphs and charts seems like it would be a challenge but also a big step forward in web applications and something much more creative than the existing products.

In any case, these features are necessary in order for people to give up their old application for the new web application. As long as it has most of the features that they would use it’s probably a good assumption that they can switch. If the product has nothing to offer them it’s quite a challenge to convince people to use the product.

As the spreadsheet product is now, I think people will need more features. I hardly use spreadsheets so I don’t see myself using it and people that do I think they will need a lot more.
