Yahoo Updates Home Page

May 16th, 2006

Yahoo has released their updated home page. I had seen screenshots of this before, but I think this is the first time it is available to the public. Overall I think it looks a lot better than the previous page. The look and feel is a lot lighter and that’s easier on the eyes, which is important for a page with that much content. I felt that the old page overburdened the reader with too much distraction. This new page appears to be a step in the right direction.

When JavaScript is disabled, the page still functions properly. The content is more organized by using tabs, which is similar to how CNN.com recently changed their home page. The tabs appear to be using AJAX to fetch data when necessary.

The important aspects of the site are well organized and easy to find. Overall the page seems to appear a lot smaller, where the previous page seemed to have all the content stacked for a much longer page.

I think the page looks good and I expect it will receive positive feedback. I will be waiting to see the others initial impression of the new page. Some people like change others do not. I think the change in the Yahoo page is a good one.
